The Martinez cocktail may be a predecessor to the martini, but these drinks could hardly be less alike. A classic Martinez starts with equal parts of gin and sweet vermouth, then you add a teaspoon of maraschino liqueur and either Angostura or orange bitters. My sherry variation, substitutes the gin with a stunning aged oloroso sherry and balances the sweetness of the vermouth with a touch of maraschino liqueur and a dash of kirsch gives the drink an extra quick.
