Like many classic cocktails, the mint julep’s origins are the subject of heated debate. It is closely connected with America’s deep south where it was famously served at the Kentucky Derby, however the name derives from the Arabic ‘julap’ which means rosewater. It is believed that the drink originated in Persia and travelled into Europe where the rose petals where substituted by mint leaves. Traditionally made with bourbon, juleps can also be made from brandy or rum.
