Somalo Chorizo Vela Picante is a delicious slicing sausage made in La Rioja with a smoky, garlicky flavour. Somalo Chorizo Vela is made using thick cuts of pork, creating a leaner, meaty sausage that has become a Basco favourite.
This tasty slicing chorizo is made by Martinez Somalo, a family business producing Spanish charcuterie since 1900. Our chorizo vela is infused with aromatic Pimenton de la Vera, a unique smoked paprika only made in one valley in western Spain. It lends a distinctly rich smoky flavor and a lush red colour.
Somalo Chorizo Vela Picante is a versatile ingredient ideal for slicing and serving on sandwiches and meat boards.This chorizo is fully cured and ready to eat with no cooking necessary. No refrigeration is required.
Each chorizo log weighs approximately 1.5Kg, so it is the ideal sausage size to slice generously and serve your guests as a tapa with Manchego cheese, olives or Jamon or stack the chorizo slices on a crusty roll and make a traditional Spanish bocadillo sandwich.
Our Chorizo Vela Picante comes vacuum pac in 1kg pieces. Keep refrigerated. Serve at room temperature, sliced thinly. Keep in the refrigerator for up to six months unopened. Once opened, wrap tightly when stored and use within 3 weeks. Gluten Free.
Martinez Somalo (La Rioja)
Martinez Somalo was founded in 1901 by Don Jose Martinez Campo. Don Jose was part of a large family and several siblings were dedicated to the manufacturing and sale of meat products. At that time products derived from the pork raw material and Don Jose would trade them in his hometown and closest villages. The processing plant was called “La Gloria Riojana”.
La Gloria Riojana was at that time a small manufacturing plant located in Baños de Rio Tobia (La Rioja), where the company is located at the moment. The own characteristics of the Baños de Rio Tobia village, at 600 meters above sea level, located in the valley of the river Najerilla and surrounded by mountains, allowed cold winters, hot summers and springs and mild autumns, which created the perfect micro climate that would favour the elaboration and drying of pork derived products.
Since May 2011, the company is being managed by the fourth family generation, maintaining the family spirit, but with the support of valuable and reliable professionals in management positions.
